In a speech at Wake Forest University, Senator John McCain says activist lawyers and activist judges "don't seek to win debates on the merits of their argument; they seek to shut down debates by order of the court." He says if he's elected, he'll "look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law and a proven commitment to judicial restraint." People, he continues, like John Roberts, Samuel Alito and the late William Rehnquist, "jurists of the highest caliber."
